Kitchen cabinet knobs were screwed in the wrong place? My kitchen cabinet knobs were screwed on the side (like the were suppose too) but instead of the corner were screwed on in the middle. What can I do to correct this?

Eggman23 replied: "Fill in all the holes with spackle or wood putty and redrill. Make a cardboard template with the hole pattern, and mark with a Sharpie. Use a washer on the inside."

I am, I said replied: "Buy tinted wood filler that matches the color of your cabinets. Minwax and other companies offer this putty in a wide variety of colors. Fill the holes and re-drill to relocate the knobs."

renegadesail replied: "The proper location for the knobs are 2inches down and 2 inches in on the upper corner away from the henge's, for lower doors and the lower corner for upper doors. The holes in the center of the doors can be plugged with a decoration of your choice."

I KNOW replied: "change the doors is about it ps fillers will look like hell"

robbtulsa replied: "If your cabinets are painted - no big deal - just drill the holes where you want them (2 inches up and 2 inches in is not the standard - on raised panel doors the rails and stiles may only be 2 - 2 1/4 inches wide). As far as filling the old holes - I would stay away from wood fillers as they tend to crack and shrink as they dry, especially when used to fill holes like that - use Bondo - it dries fast, is paintable, and won't shrink or crack - ever. If your cabinets are stained - same thing, only the bondo won't take the stain - you can try Famowood wood filler (just buy the filler for the same wood species as your cabinets, or you might want to search for an escutcheon that can be applied over the old holes. There are several manufacturers of these - possibly the same brand as your existing knobs. Try for ideas."

I have 34 kitchen cabinet knobs made of brass which tarnish. Can I paint them? My kitchen needs a makeover, and the hardware looks awful dark. It takes a lot of elbow grease to lighten the brass knobs, so thought maybe metal paint would work better?

T replied: "i would def get the tarnish off of them first"

barbedwireribbons replied: "Polish them first at least. I'd reccomend just polishing them, metal paint can be a job..."

jayffarr replied: "No, you cannot paint over brass knobs. It will just flake off."

Cameron I replied: "You can paint them. However, they would look very bad. I would reccommend polishing them. Here are some sites to help: This explains that you need to sand the clear coat off. Then you can re- coat them with special agents."

PatV replied: "The hardware options are fabulous these days. Before you spend $$ on paint, polish, tools, etc.. , pay a visit to your local Home Depot/Lowe's/Ace Hardware/Design store - You'll be amazed at how many choices. Consider finding the same design in different sizes, for drawers, large cabinets, small drawers, etc.. We switched our "brassy" cheap knobs for ceramic ones with blue details - looks awesome and worth the few cents more..."

The ReDesign Diva replied: "You can try a metal paint but it might not stay on long and may end up looking worse than the original ones. Here's what I suggest (we do this in homes we stage to sell): 1. Elbow grease... Clean those knobs with Brasso. It won't be too hard to get the tarnish off with this product. 2. Rinse the knobs and dry them. 3. Spray the knobs with a clear varnish spray, either mat finish or crystal (I prefer crystal). Let them dry. Oh... 2 or 3 thin coats is much better than one thick one. And they need to dry completely. 4. Put the knobs back on the cabinets. The reason they tarnish is because they become oxidized by the air that touches them. If you seal them, the air can't get at them and they'll stay shiny like new. Enjoy!"

How can I remove lacquer finish from brass kitchen cabinet knobs? I do not like the shiny brass look. I would like to remove the clear finish, and then use something to "antique" the knobs. They are solid brass. There are 50 solid brass knobs in the kitchen of the house I just bought. I do not like shiny brass, but I like the knobs. Replacing these expensive knobs would be a bit much.

pescador replied: "instead of exposing yourself to the chems just buy new ones or laquer thinner"

Meri replied: "What kind of finish are you trying to achieve? If you are looking for an older, antique look, try doing what the person who had this best answer recommended. This is an interesting set of instructions for painting brass. I have seen this done using a spray paint of a different metallic finish. Read the comments too...one of those ladies seems to know exactly what she is doing. "

Does anyone know where to buy a layout template for kitchen cabinet knobs? I'm looking for a plastic template with holes to show where to drill the holes for cabinet knobs. DIYnetwork.com says they're available at home improvement stores, but I can't find them. Has anyone seen or used them? If anyone has an online link, I'd really appreciate it.

DR. DIRT replied: "hey--most knobs have one hole,,,pulls have 2 holes,,,i in stall cabinets every day and have never heard of a temp plate as you speak of,,,what we do is,,,measure distance from one hole to other and mark it with a nail set..then drill the hole,,all ways place a piece of scrap wood on back side of door ---to prevent splintering,,, and dont drill a hole in yo finger or hand....as far as distance from top and side of door u can make a simple temp plate your self...good luck,,,and watch out fer yo fingers and hand...when drilling...."

oneman2dogs replied: "Seems like Rockwell makes one. You may want to try looking in the telephone directory under cabinet/wood working tools for a distributor"

Mike H replied: "Home Depot sells them. Ask a person in the hardware deparartment."

E-rock replied: "I bought one last year from either Lowe's or Home Depot. It was only a few dollars if I recall correctly. Due to the shaped edge of my cabinet doors, it was really difficult to get it lined up correctly. If I had to do it again, I'd probably make my own with some pieces of scrap wood."

Is there a durable paint that can be used to change gold tone kitchen cabinet knobs and pulls to silver tone? Replacing the knobs and pulls would be too expensive. There are 39 and each one has a backplate.

dorie0371 replied: "I would use a rustolium (sp?) product they are made to adhere to metal. Just check out the selection at your local home improvement store. You definatly want a spray paint. just make sure it is made for use on metal."

jeanjean replied: "go to local hardware store and ask if old ones have to cleaned or put in paint thinner first, and then they will help you find the correct paint. we just replaced all of our knobs and it is very expensive"

badneighborvt replied: "You want to scar the surface first with sandpaper. then you could use any Rustoleum spray product."

The ReDesign Diva replied: "There are quite a few actually. If you really want them to work though, make certain the paint you buy is in a spray and is for metal. Corrostop works well. Also, make absolutely certain you prime them first with an oil-based spray primer. Bullseye 1-2-3 works great, dries fast and is relatively inexpensive. DO NOT skip the primer or the paint will eventually rub off your handles. Enjoy!"

Jan Stolz replied: "They make a metallic silver spray paint; just remember to use a primer first or the silver will flake off in a very short time."

Tim D replied: "Everyone seems to have it about right here but I would add that when you chose your paint that you also chose a clear that will hold up to cleaner that you use. Good Luck"

Should kitchen cabinet knobs and lighting match appliances? I am sprucing up my kitchen. The cabinets are an oak color. The walls are a khaki/tan color (Sherwin Williams Latte)... I'm adding new ceramic floors (probably like Roman gold or American Olean Hazelnut - still debating that). My fridge is stainless steel. I'll be adding a stainless steel stove and eventually as money permits a matching microhood and dishwasher. I need new lighting and am going with track lighting to spread the light around. In the eat in, I'm changing the pendant to another (it's awful gold and frosted dome now). I'm also adding knobs to the cabinets. Question: I like the dark bronze lights. Should the lights match the appliances in a nickel or something? Should the knobs also match the appliances? I'm thinking the dark color lends to the floor, cabinet and wall color, but I'm not sure if they will have to match the appliances? FYI: the kitchen accessories are red.

andygroch replied: "Some people do tend to stay in the same color tone. At times that can be a little over done. The stainless fixtures would break up the overdone thing and serve as great accents that would compliment each other. I've been dealing with these issues for a while and suggest the latter but it still boils down to your individual taste."

bwomj replied: "I don't think there is any need for knobs and lighting to match the appliances. Just choose the colours you like best and it will look nice."
